We're being nice for a day

Do this. Find one or more actual policy statement for each of the presidential candidates that you agree with. Let's omit the wiseassing this one time. Also, no slogans or aspirations. See if you can do it. I took mine from the candidates' own web sites.

Hillary - Eliminate No Child Left Behind

Obama - Cut pork barrel spending. He starts with a concrete proposal and then gets a little vague: Obama will slash earmarks to no greater than year 2001 levels and ensure all spending decisions are open to the public. His actual record is not bad. Most or all of his earmarks were for non-profit organizations. Hillary clobbered him with her earmarks. McCain had zero.

McCain - Cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 25%. Not low enough for my tastes, but a step in the right direction. Ireland, anybody? 12.5%. Also, Taiwan's cabinet has just announced its plans to lower their rate from 25% to 17.5%, making it the second-lowest in the world.

Update - Thanks Red A. 17.5% is not the second lowest rate anymore.

couldn't agree more with the end to no child left behind (though obama is for ending it as well and i reckon mccain will stop it if he gets elected)
obama: talk to leaders we don't agree with, including Raul.
hillary: advanced technology to monitor borders, not fences
mccain: continued funding of NASA, future moon deployments and a mission to Mars.

Is tapping tall redheaded chicks who are half your age an actual policy? 'Cause if it is, I agree with that one too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_rates_around_the_world

Many countries have lower corp. tax rates than Taiwan's proposed rate. Its not the second lowest at all.

I know from personal experience that the BVI has a 0% tax rate.

I'll have to get back on the original question, though.

All quotes from the candidates' web sites:

Clinton: "Hillary believes that we should develop a set of budget rules similar to those we had in the 90s which required us to fund new expenditures with new revenues or cuts in other areas."

Obama: "Mandate Accurate Loan Disclosure: Obama will create a Homeowner Obligation Made Explicit (HOME) score, which will provide potential borrowers with a simplified, standardized borrower metric (similar to APR) for home mortgages. The HOME score will allow individuals to easily compare various mortgage products and understand the full cost of the loan." (not sure this is possible, but if it is, its a good idea>)

McCain: "John McCain believes our schools can and should compete to be the most innovative, flexible and student-centered รข€“ not safe havens for the uninspired and unaccountable. He believes we should let them compete for the most effective, character-building teachers, hire them, and reward them.

If a school will not change, the students should be able to change schools. John McCain believes parents should be empowered with school choice to send their children to the school that can best educate them..."

This was a very useful exercise, because I found myself searching very, very hard among the Democratic side for things I actually thought were good ideas. I was really worried for a second with Hillary, but she came through in the end. For McCain, a guy I thought I didn't like so much, his stances on many issues were good for me.

p.s. He sure looks like he supports NCLB.

"No Child Left Behind has focused our attention on the realities of how students perform against a common standard. John McCain believes that we can no longer accept low standards for some students and high standards for others. In this age of honest reporting, we finally see what is happening to students who were previously invisible. While that is progress all its own, it compels us to seek and find solutions to the dismal facts before us."

Senator Gravel wants to decriminalize minor drug offenses. however, he lacks a hot red headed british wife, so i'm sticking with my original plan.

Red A said...

Okay, so for Gravel, I like his decriminalizing of minor drug offenses. And for Kooky, that he has a hot wife.

Maybe we could have a "debate" between Kuchinich and Thompson's wives...bikinis, baby oil and some tequilla? You know, to get the young people to stop being so apathetic.

Bread,

Sounds like you're in the 90-95% success rate for the hospital thingy. Take care.

Why would Obama want to talk to Ron Paul?

Karl,

What about Da Vid of the Light Party?

Red A,

This is the last time I'll allow you to contradict the China Post. Do it again and I'll have Ma sue you for slander.

Red A and Bread,

Rejected animatronic puppets from the Hall of Presidents are not allowed to run.

obama doesn't need to talk to paul, kucinich does. and why do presidents and vps need to talk anyway? ike hated nixon, FDR met with truman like three times before dying, and gore and clinton didn't speak after lewinsky.

anyhow, i may have to wait to until the general election to get my write-in, but i'm sure both guys would talk to each other if everyone wrote them in. they'd just be thrilled to be relevant. and they agree on several issues (anti-NAFTA, immediate troop withdrawal, increased educational funding and standards, torture is never permissible, etc.). i personally am not on board the bash free trade bandwagon and question the results of a complete and immediate withdrawal, but the only person i would ever agree with on everything is laid up in his cabin recuperating from surgery (which went well, thanks for your warm sentiments all).

and go easy on the name calling in the 'be nice for a day' section. or is the day over?

The day is over you hippie. What kind of drugs do they give you for an outpatient surgery? I didn't know Tylenol for Kids had that much of a kick. Next time I will provide a flow chart for you when I attempt humor.

Oh, have a nice day.

just don't bash my man kucinich and we will get along nicely.

and by the way, i will recount my tuesday for you to lay all fears to rest of my hippiness:
combed my hair (which is now short)
put on a wing dinger suit
went to a church
sang in that church
went to court
went to the doctor
went back to court
worked till 8pm
came home.

can you get any more republican of a day than that? granted i was singing at a funeral, but still...

The Light Party? Aw hell no. America does not need peace. What America needs is more protracted military occupations in the Mid-East. And none of this half-assed UN peacekeeping stuff- we need to put ground troops in as many Muslim countries as possible.
