A Call to Canadia

When I look to the Great White North and the current political situation, I can't help but chuckle. When the great traitor Belinda wins a seat, when the 'I don't support gay marriage guy' becomes prime minister, and a party professing its desire to split from the government gains fifty seats in the aforementioned government, I wonder how in touch with the beat of the nation are all the self appointed, flag on the backpack, super inclusive professing ambassadors of your fine nation.

Most every Canadianer I meet tells me Ralph Klein is a freak, and yet he continuously gets put back into office. When I mention this people say that's just Alberta. Is Alberta in Canada? When they go off against the 'crazy separatists' they say they are just those wackos from Quebec. When I say that the Tories own the prairies, people say they are just farmers.

Seems to me the only Canadianers which are real Canadianers come from Vancouver or Toronto and believe in same sex marriage, world peace and hate George Bush... All admirable qualities (and ones which I by and large agree) , but perhaps not an accurate depiction of the fine nation to the north.

You forgot all the Canadianers who talk about their great gun control laws and then Kevlar goes and posts photos of his kith and kin with guns and dead animals.

Dear Bread,

Thank you ever so much. Your post made ME chuckle. Despite Canada's overwheening interest in all things American your fair land has seemingly thwarted all our attempts at garnerning attention. What truly pisses Canadians off is not Bush, the Red States, or TV evangelism et. al. Rather, it is the blatant apathy with which our country is regarded by your citizens. Having read this blog intermittently I just want to say thanks. You self-apparent obsession with all things Canadia is the panacea we all yearn for. It couldn't be that our sense of pride in our country somehow infuriates you because you are convinced of the inherent superiority of your own great land, is it? Naw, that would be way to obvious for a sly dog like you. Much love, a Canadianer

i am not sure if infuriate is an accurate word to describe my feelings towards your citizenry (in fact if it weren't for my canadianer friends, apathy would fit to a tee). however, i would say what humors me is the apparent myth you have created surrounding your homeland of peace and love...as to the superiority of my own nation, i think that it is safe to say i have traveled enough to realize there is no superiority to any nation (andorra excepted) and am skeptical enough to recognize the myths americans create about our own.

have courage man, sign your name, you can do it. we won't hate you on this blog (though we may make fun of you)...

Brett, I agree with most of your points. I agree that most self appointed, flag on the backpack, super inclusive professing ambassadors of your fine nation. are not that in touch with their nation. I argue that is true of most ex-pat groups. Most Americans I have met here (with the exception of Red A, J Hole and PJ) don't seem to be that in touch with their country either.

Maybe this is your point.

seems to me the only Canadianers which are real Canadianers come from Vancouver or Toronto and believe in same sex marriage, world peace and hate George Bush You can't be serious. How quickly you forget the maritimers. I thought there were 1-2 writing on this blog.

The BQ also loves gay marriage, world peace, hate George Bush but unfortunately also hate Canadianers.

big el,
the reason for not including the maritimers stems from a conversation with ryan's brother last year. he said that he and most of his working class (worked on an assembly line making conveyer belts)friends supported the invasion of iraq. support for bush from the working class? new brunswick is off.
kevin is apolitical and doesn't give a shit about anything other than putang, beer, his family and his friends (all good things mind you). sorry nova scotia -- your off.
p.e.i. is home to bud the spud and ann of green gables -- farmers and prudes? sorry pei, you're done.
newfies? well, they're newfies...

that should read 'sorry nova scotia -- you're off.'

I see and you are probably correct, being pro war is often a class issue in most countries.

But don't you think this the Candian electorate punishing Liberal corruption more than a switch to Bush like Neo-Conservatism? Unless Harper can pull a Diefenbaker I don't see them lasting that long especially with such a small minority and no other ideological allies other than maybe the Liberals who will never support them. Harper wants free-votes but I don't see it happening.

i do not know enough, but what are the chances of the BQ supporting harper on more provincial autonomy? i think harper makes little changes, then blames the liberals for holding up the process of cleaning the system (while he stays away from touchy issues). after this he calls elections himself (one year?) hopoing to gain more seats. your thoughts?
